Law of the "Splintered Paddle"
"O my people,
Honor thy God;
respect alike [the right of] men great and humble;
See to it that our aged our, our women, and our
children
Lie down by the roadside
Without fear or harm.
Disobey, and die."
(Book Kamehameha the Great-Page,87)
The law of the splintered paddle is one of the most famous laws that King Kamehameha the Great made. This law was made when King Kamehameha the Great saw some men that had something that he wanted. He ran after the men to try and get it but his foot got stuck in a rock. One of the men came back and hit King Kamehameha the Great on the head so hard that it split the paddle in half.
Twelve years latter the men where brought back to King Kamehameha and were going to be punished, but instead King Kamehameha blamed himself for attacking innocent people. He gave them a gift of land and set them free and latter sent out this law. Today this is still believed to be a law on the Hawaiian Islands. '
